PLANET Day of Service recap - HighGroveLandscape professionals across the country were out in the sunshine on Earth Day, April 22, to volunteer their time and skills to reinvigorate green spaces as a part of the Professional Landcare Network’s annual Day of Service.

The goal of the program is to create outdoor spaces in which people can be active, relax or spend time together. Many projects involve planting learning gardens and landscaping at schools; rehabilitating sports fields and community parks; and creating healing spaces at hospitals, cancer centers, group homes and other nonprofit organizations.

Over the past five years, landscape industry professionals have completed 1,000 projects with the help of more than 12,000 volunteers at an estimated value of $4 million.

HighGrove Partners has participated in this event each year since its inception in 2009. This year’s project took place at the Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Ga.

A Special Place For Special Children

PLANET Day of Service recap - HighGrove VolunteersThe Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett is a nonprofit, private educational and therapeutic facility that serves special needs children from ages 2 through young adult. In operation since March 1987, it’s the only program of its kind in Gwinnett County.

In 2012, HighGrove identified the school as one of the local community organizations it wanted to support as part of its HighHopes program, where employees make tax deductible donations through payroll deductions to support local community service initiatives. We believe in the school’s mission, which is to provide the highest quality of educational and therapeutic programming available to children with and without disabilities, to nurture and challenges students in all developmental and curricular areas, to instill a positive self-image and love for learning in students and to support parents in their understanding of children’s needs and abilities.

Surrounded by Summer Color

PLANET Day of Service recap - HighGroveHighGrove crews installed landscape beds at both of the school’s entrances on Earth Day after clearing out undergrowth near the woods area. They also installed a landscape bed in front of the school by a monument and signage where only turf existed before. One of HighGrove’s landscape designers drew up the plans and ordered the plant material for the project ahead of time, and many of HighGrove’s senior leadership, middle management, client relationship managers, and accounting and office personnel dedicated the day to help do the work to transform this special school’s landscape from bland to grand.

To dress up the space, HighGrove chose colorful and textured plant varieties, including hollies, daylilies and crape myrtles. And students from the Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett even came outside during the project to join the fun, helping to move plant materials and plant trees and shrubs. “These are children who do not like to get dirty, but today they all got dirty,” explained Elinore Trotter, the school’s principal. “Many of the children do not talk much, but today they all talked. They all just had a great time. Thank you.”
